About Dr. Lisa Thoman
Hi there, I’m so glad you’re here!
I am Lisa Thoman, a licensed psychologist and private practice owner in the North Dallas/Richardson area in Texas. I am also a mom (human and cat), wife, animal and nature lover, and enjoyer of hiking, reading, learning and coffee.
Pronouns: she/her
I’m passionate about empowering folks to move forward in life in a way that is meaningful and intentional, showing up as who and how they desire to be in areas that are important to them. If self-doubt, avoidance and anxiety related to distressing life events and changes have led to your feeling stuck, hopeless, discouraged and low on confidence, in therapy, we can work together to acknowledge the painful things and also that they are not all of you and don’t define you.
We can work collaboratively, tapping into your own internal wisdom and areas of strength to identify areas for change and growth. You may find that this can lead you toward a more authentic and genuine version of yourself versus trying to be who you think you should be or who others have told you to be or the self that was shaped by past trauma or hurt.
How my passion developed:
I moved a lot when I was a kid and I often felt like I didn't fit in. In my teens and early twenties, I felt invisible, lost and doubted my own worth. I also got really good at avoiding anything that would cause me anxiety (which was just about anything).
In my mid-30s, I finally felt like I was gaining some traction and then, midlife struck and I stopped feeling like myself and started feeling stuck again. Through therapy, values work, reflection and mindfulness and other skills I learned along the way, I was able to reimagine the life that I wanted for myself moving forward and to begin the process of building that life and that has led me to where I am now.
How I help others:
I’ve learned from personal and professional experience how helpful therapy can be. Through our work together, I would like to be able to empower you to identify deeply held values and passions, to inspire and support you in acting on them, and to help you identify possibilities and find and catch moments of contentment.
Sometimes a part of that process is working collaboratively to identify and let go of perspectives, rules and patterns that don’t work for you anymore and may be getting in your way. This can free you up to live by your own guidelines and values versus reacting to that internal critic and feeling controlled by fear and lack of belief in yourself.
Sometimes it gets scary, stepping into unknown territory and together, we can work on acknowledging the hard parts and helping you build self-compassion as you negotiate these.
